Course Learning Objectives
- Achieve proficiency in the physiology of oxygen delivery, how it breaks down during critical illness, recognition of shock, and the way critical care interventions can facilitate this process.
- Develop expertise in ECMO fundamentals, including components, circuit monitoring, patient selection and cannulation strategies.
- Gain a comprehensive understanding of the physiologic principles related to ECMO involving blood flow and membrane limitations, hypoxia in VV ECMO, the rationale of VA ECMO and the effects of retrograde flow in VA ECMO.
- Attain an integrated comprehension of management principles for patients on ECMO that include mechanical ventilation, blood flow titration/weaning, pharmacokinetics and anticoagulation.
