Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Persistent and often overwhelming work challenges can exact a heavy toll on nurses, placing them at great risk for burnout, anxiety and exhaustion. Creative writing and journaling can have a positive impact on these risks. The benefits of writing as a coping strategy and mindfulness practice are discussed in this presentation. Specific writing techniques to assist with decreasing stress and to foster improved self-awareness are taught. Session complexity: foundational.

Objectives

  • Review literature on journaling/creative writing and its impact on healthcare professionals.
  • Define potential benefits writing can imbue in regard to self-awareness, releasing emotions and synthesizing complex situations.
  • Explain/teach specific writing techniques with the potential to assist with decreasing stress and improving overall sense of wellbeing.
