Non ventilator hospital-acquired infection (NVHAP) is the most common hospital-acquired infection. This foundational to high-level session reviews the most recent updates from SHEA/IDSA/APIC/ TJC Practice Recommendations on NVHAP prevention and how nurses can apply them to clinical care. Critically ill non ventilated patients are among the highest risk for NVHAP, signifying that critical care nurses should lead the way in NVHAP prevention. An NVHAP prevention toolkit is included.

  • Review the incidence, patient safety factors and cost of NVHAP.
  • Discuss the etiology and risk factors for NVHAP and the impact on patient outcomes.
  • Describe the most recent updates from SHEA/IDSA/APIC/ TJC Practice Recommendations on NVHAP prevention and apply to clinical care.
