Activity Summary

The goal of this session is to equip nurses with evidence-based practice guidelines for the management of DKA, thyroid storm, myxedema coma and adrenal crisis. Individuals who enter the critical care unit are at high risk for life-threatening endocrine emergencies. They can be easily overlooked because they may present with no prior history and are not routinely admitted to endocrine care units.

Objectives

  • Identify populations at high risk for development of DKA, thyroid storm, myxedema coma and adrenal crisis in the critical care setting.
  • Differentiate between the hypo- and hyperfunctioning of endocrine organs and the biofeedback mechanism in critically ill adults.
  • Discuss the emergency management of life-threatening endocrine emergencies: DKA, thyroid storm, myxedema coma and adrenal crisis.
