Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Nurses are tasked with preventing CLABSIs. Nurse rounds are conducted by a clinical nurse or the clinical nurse specialist. Critical central catheter dressing assessment, intervention, and education are among the many tools available to reduce the CLABSI risk. Identifying patients’ skin allergies and identifying appropriate dressings are essential. Standardizing central catheter rounds for nurses improve patient outcomes. Adding a much needed algorithm for central catheter dressing management with guidance on how to choose dressings and when to change dressings provides nurses with standards and consistency within the critical care unit to improve patient outcomes and decrease the rate of CLABSI.

Objectives

  • Identify when a central line dressing requires an intervention.
  • Discuss three interventions used to decrease CLABSI rate.
  • Describe two interventions to consider for patients with skin allergies or dermatitis.
